Every Fall, the Calgary International Film Festival showcases up to 200 feature and short films that are likely to sweep awards season, but Calgary is a great spot for film buffs year-round.

With a bustling production scene, Calgary is the backdrop for some of the world's favourite movies and TV shows. Why not check out the locations where some of the biggest blockbusters and critically acclaimed flicks were filmed?

Here are 8 filming locations you can visit around Calgary that you’ll recognize from some of your favourite movies and television series:

1. Fargo (2014-present)

Calgary has the hidden gems and quirky characters the Cohen Brothers would appreciate. Named Canada’s greatest neighbourhood, Inglewood serves as the backdrop for the television reimagining of the classic film. Grab a slice at Inglewood Pizza (as featured in the series) for the ultimate small screen experience.

Not only that, in his 2018 Golden Globe acceptance speech, Ewan McGregor gave a special shout out to the production team in Calgary! You know you HAVE to check out the Fargo spots now!

2. Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Look up to the same bronco busting saddles Jake Gyllenhaal checked out at Ranchman’s, one of Calgary’s favourite Western style dancehalls and one of the bars used for this famous love story where Jack met Lureen, breaking everyone’s heart (including Ennis).

3. Superman (1978)

Look up, look way up, and capture the views of downtown Calgary that made it the perfect stand in for the Manhattan skyline. Head to the top of the Calgary Tower and see where the prairies meet the mountains from Clark Kent’s perspective.

4. The Revenant (2015)

Acclaimed director Alejandro Iñárritu brought Leonardo DiCaprio to the beauty of Kananaskis Country and the Canadian Badlands for the backdrop of his wilderness epic. See the vistas of The Revenant and steer clear of the bears in Dinosaur Provincial Park and Kananaskis Country for a unique silver screen experience.
